Fresh popcorn and cotton candy fueled the fun at the UTA Libraries Welcome Back Fair on Saturday, Aug. 19. Students around campus came to the central library to enjoy the circus themed games and activities.
Heather Claney, Manager of Community Events, stated that this event is not only a great way to kick off the fall semester, but showcase what the library offers in a fun, inviting way.
"The Welcome Back Fair is a circus theme. We have got snacks like your traditional carnival offerings, such as popcorn, cotton candy and snow cones," Heather said. "With the activities, we have tried to include all of the different library departments that are hosting them. So, students can also learn about research services, access and discovery and open access resources, all while having fun."
To help create that carnival and circus-type atmosphere, several performers came out to the library to perform. These included stilt walkers and a juggler. The juggler even gave short lessons to students interested in juggling small items like tennis balls.
Lynette Anderson, a finance major, stopped by the library by accident. She was drawn to the event by the fun going on in and outside the building.
"I was trying to go to the gym, but then I realized it was closed. Then I saw the balloons and walked over," Lynette said. "I think that this is honestly really cool. I was really surprised that there were not more people here."
Anderson stated that this event is a good way to ease into the start of the semester and a nice way to meet new people.
Shaubham Malankar, a master's in computer science student, felt that the event brought much-needed fun from a summer that has been both "hectic" and, at times, "boring." He noted that the games brought people together.
The Welcome Back Fair is just one of many events that UTA Libraries will offer students throughout the academic year. These events help bring students, faculty, staff and the public together, building a community beyond campus and into the metroplex.
