Dr. Cornelia Winguth was awarded a UTA CARES Adoption Stipend for her project, “Earth and Environmental Sciences.” Winguth, Assistant Professor of Instruction in UTA’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, received the grant to adopt an open textbook in Introduction to Oceanography.

The UTA CARES Grant Program, managed by UTA Libraries, helps educators adopt and create open educational resources (OER), which are free course materials that are licensed so others can revise and reuse the content. Winguth’s project will save UTA students enrolled in the course (GEOL 1350) approximately $5,600 in Fall 2020.

Winguth said she was motivated to adopt an OER to increase equity: “I have chosen to adopt an OER for my Introduction to Oceanography course to ensure that all students have immediate and equitable access and will not have to delay the purchase of the textbook due to their financial situation, especially during the current pandemic crisis which might leave many students even more financially vulnerable.”
