Scholarly Impact

Researchers are increasingly being asked to demonstrate the impact of their work, whether it be for grants, promotion and tenure, accreditation, or to broaden exposure of research to the public. UTA Libraries recommends the following best practices:

  • Make sure your Curriculum Vitae is up-to-date and available online
  • Publish with a publisher with which we have an open access agreement, to ensure that the Article or Book Processing Charges are covered or discounted
  • Create an ORCID account and/or a Google Scholar profile
    • Add your publications to your profile and use your accounts when you publish in the future
  • Deposit your publications in the UTA institutional repository ResearchCommons
  • Assess and report the metrics for your articles and books through publishers, repositories, and Google Scholar
    • Citations all-time
    • Citations per year
    • Abstract views
    • Downloads
    • PDF views
    • Captures (bookmarks, favorites, readership size)
  • Determine the Journal Impact Factor for your publication venues
  • Use social media to increase the visibility of your scholarship

Increasing your scholarly impact is an iterative process that starts with building your scholarly digital identity. We also recommend discipline-specific ways for faculty to increase scholarly impact. Contact your liaison librarian for support.
