The spirit of Halloween was in the air as students took part in crafting some spooky dishes at the Thursday, Oct. 27 Maverick Kitchen held at the UTA Central Library.

Squid Ink Spaghetti was the dish on the menu at the cooking demonstration. As the pasta cooked, students focused their efforts on creating the sauce to go with it. The sauce is comprised of garlic, butter, red pepper flakes, lemon zest, lemon juice and chicken stock.

An undeclared major, Annie Teng, stated that cooking is an enjoyable activity that produces something tasty.

“I would say that I am a pretty good home cook. I cook pretty much every meal for myself, but not I am not an expert in any way,” Annie said. “Cooking for yourself is nice because you can control the portions and the taste so that it best fits yourself. It is just a skill that everyone should have.”

Annie stated that this was her first time making a spaghetti dish without a tomato or green base, but she thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Mayte Campos, an interdisciplinary studies major, shared Annie’s feelings noting that the cooking demonstration taught good life skills. She feels that these demonstrations help people feel more confident in the kitchen when making something at home for themselves, their family and their friends.

“I don’t know how to cook anything except for microwave stuff, but this is way healthier. You get to keep the recipe, so if I wanted to do it again at home, I could,” Mayte said. “Learning it here helps you get used to it, so you can cook it at home if you want to.”

Throughout the cooking demonstration Grace Backus, a Library Specialist, walked students through the receipt showing them when to add different ingredients so they could replicate the recipe themselves.

“Today went well. We had a good amount of people show up,” Grace said. “Everyone enjoyed their pasta, and that always makes me happy. Squid Ink pasta is something that looks very adventurous. I was worried that people would think, ‘oh, no,’ but everyone enjoyed it.”
