Honoree's Remarks

Alfred Wegener is one of the most recognized scientists and Arctic explorers of the 20th century and his name appears in every textbook in geology and paleoclimatology. His theories of continental drift and ice ages revolutionized the field of paleoclimatology, building the foundation of my deep-time paleoclimatic studies, in particular of the Late Permian - Early Triassic transition and the Early Eocene. His first edition of “The Origin of Continents and Oceans” was published 104 years ago. Alfred Wegener’s interests included astronomy, meteorology, geophysics, and paleoclimatology.
