Honoree's Remarks

The art of the Mexican illustrator José Guadalupe Posada reflects the vibrant print culture that urban commoners consumed in late nineteenth and early twentieth century Mexico. Mexico has canonized Posada as one its greatest modern artists and his iconic illustrations of skeletons have become a vital and universally recognized part of Mexican and U.S. folk art. I grew up surrounded by Posada imagery thanks to my parents, who collected Mexican folk art. Few Mexican or Latin American artists loom as large in my heart and mind as José Guadalupe Posada does.
