Michael Fellman was a dear friend, who gave me my first job in Vancouver, British Columbia, many years ago. While I was learning the ropes as a beginning professor, he was on sabbatical writing his book on Sherman. I shared his office and work and so much more with Michael that year. I loved the book when it appeared a year or two later, and I came to love Michael very much. He died tragically in June 2012. He visited UTA once, to give a talk on Robert E. Lee to Phi Alpha Theta, the History Honor Society, and on that occasion several of my students got to see some of what I saw in Michael Fellman, a wonderful teacher, a brilliant scholar of the Civil War era, and a great friend and mentor. And so I dedicate this biography of William Sherman to Michael Fellman.
