Honoree's Remarks
Western culture has done a thoroughly terrible job of documenting and acknowledging the leadership and contributions of women to just about everything. Jazz is no different. Since pre-jazz times in the late 1800’s, women have been essential to the creative impulse, direction, intelligence, and political power of the jazz art form. This book contains interviews with 37 living women jazz musicians about their experiences becoming world-class musicians in a traditionally male-dominated field.
