Honoree's Remarks

As I reflect on my recent promotion to the rank of Professor, there are many books that have personal significance to me. Musimathics by D. Gareth Loy is a lovely two volume set that explores the intersection between music, physics and computer programming. Is language a music?: writings on musical form and signification by David Lidov is a beautiful collection of writings on contemporary and classical music from the perspective of music semiotics. A Practical Guide to Musical Composition by Alan Belkin is at once a lovely sourcebook for those interested in composing music, as well as a fascinating philosophical discussion on how western music functions. The good news is these books are easily available through UT-Arlington library or, in the case of the third, offered as a free download by the author.

What then to request for this occasion? The deepest and most cherished opportunity that UT-Arlington has afforded me has been that of forging bonds with so many gifted and talented music students. I am fortunate to have maintained friendships and professional relationships with many of them many years past their graduation from UT-Arlington. What better mark, then, than something that reflects the creative efforts of at least a few of these talented individuals. To that end I am asking UT Arlington Libraries to adopt the CD “Drive” by local Fort Worth band Lindby. Lindby is a group of UT-Arlington alumni including Nick Spurrier, who studied private composition with me and graduated with a bachelor of music degree in Music Composition, along with Nick Goodrich, who earned a bachelor of music degree in music media, Ali Grant, bachelor of music in music education, and Kyle Claset, who earned a bachelor of music degree in music theory. To round out the group is drummer, Logan Bowers who anticipates graduating this winter with a bachelor degree in music media. With the exception of the latter, I have had all of these talented musicians in one or another of my classes and have very fond memories of each of them. I could not be happier than to have my name associated with these fine young musicians, and to have their latest CD housed among the UT Arlington Library collection.
