Honoree's Remarks

This book is important to the field of phenomenology, and to the many related fields in philosophy, psychology, the social sciences, and more. Edmund Husserl (1859-1938) is widely considered to be one of the most important philosophers of the 20th century. He wrote in German, using many new terms and many old terms with altered meanings, making an understanding of his many published and unpublished writings a very difficult task. This difficulty is increased as his works have been translated into many languages, from Japanese to English, French and Spanish. Thus there is a need for careful attention to the translation of many terms, phrases, and ideas. The authors of this work, Dermot Moran and Joseph Cohen, are established experts in European philosophy (especially in phenomenology) and in multilingual research, making this work indispensable to scholars and students alike.
