Honoree's Remarks

How We Think: A Theory of Goal-Oriented Decision Making and its Educational Applications” offers a pioneering theory and model for interpreting goal-oriented decision making. This work builds upon and generalizes more than 30 years of Alan Schoenfeld’s research in mathematical problems solving. Schoenfeld’s research in mathematical problem solving has been central for my own research in mathematical problem solving and my work in developing inquiry-based, mathematically-intensive tasks for courses from calculus to graduate-level mathematics for secondary teachers. This book brings us closer to a theory that explains why students and teachers do what they do and may eventually help us understand effective or ineffective behaviors and actions for facilitating deep learning.
