Honoree's Remarks

This important collection contains the complete live and studio RCA recordings of one of classical music’s most decorated and beloved icons, American pianist Van Cliburn. Its 28 CDs (including a DVD titled Van Cliburn – Concert Pianist) present 83 solo and orchestral works including Cliburn’s 1958 debut recording of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, a work which will be forever tied to Cliburn’s stunning victory at the first International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow during the height of the Cold War. Released in February of 2013, just two weeks prior to Cliburn’s death at age 78, this set preserves the artistry of one of the most important pianists of our time. Known for his rich tone, deep sensitivity, and well-paced clarity, Cliburn’s performances have long been a source of beauty and inspiration to generations of music lovers and musicians. His recordings and live performances have always held a special place in my memory, and I am pleased the UT Arlington Library will house this complete album collection.
