Honoree's Remarks

150 years ago, a father and son team designed and hand crafted intricate glass reproductions of marine invertebrates. These glass animals found their way to Cornell University where a faculty member, Drew Harvell found them and restored them to their original beauty. She then set out on a global trek to find the living representative of each animal. This book discusses the effect of climate change and human impacts on the animals and our marine ecosystems. For me, it means a lot to see a book written by one of my female mentors that beautifully overlays art with scientific discovery and uses the Blashka legacy to illustrate the current state of the oceans and marine biodiversity.
