Gerhard Richter's Atlas is a comprehensive publication that maps an artist's ideas, processes, life and times. As a studio artist/educator, I have shared the strategy of Richter's Atlas with my own students, asking them to raise their awareness of the visual world. This broader level of experience has helped to drive my students towards a higher level of visual and conceptual thinking. Recently, in my courses, the Atlas has been transformed into a collection of shared Instagram photographs. By using this smartphone application as a tool for sharing creative influences, we are able to have glimpses into our studio practices and creative processes.
