Honoree's Remarks
My father introduced me to jazz and had a small collection of jazz recordings (LPs). Among them was a Basie album that I loved and I listened to it until I could sing all of the melodies and solos. To this day, Basie remains one of my favorites and I have spent a great deal of time teaching students to play lead alto in the style of the great Marshal Royal, who was instrumental in establishing the Basie "sound".
