Despite Atul Gawande’s calm focus on the social aspects of individuals’ mortality, as I read the book, I could not stop my thoughts from turning inwards. Atul made me, and I am sure he will make you, think about inter-generational relationships, past, present, and future. What I particularly like about Atul’s writing is that he lays out moral issues in clear sight but rarely does he spell them out, and when he does, there is little trace of any moralizing. What a wonderful ability to have.
