Pedagogy of the oppressed
Freire, P. (2000). Pedagogy of the oppressed (30th anniversary ed.). New York: Continuum.
Paulo Freire’s book Pedagogy of the Oppressed has not only been personally inspirational, but has also been significant in my career. The struggle of humanization and dehumanization, of education as an instrument for liberation, and of people as incomplete beings working to become more fully human resonates with me in understanding my teaching practice, research, and my place in society. No matter where I am at in life and what is happening in society, this book continues to be a beacon—a place for which I can return that provides me more insight with each repetitive reading. Paulo Freire’s influence has shaped me in positive ways, and I hope to forward his lessons to my students as they become critically conscious citizens of the U.S. and the world.
