Honoree's Remarks

Two decades ago, this was the book that inspired me to think about leaving a corporate career, get a masters and a doctorate, and teach what I had loved since my undergraduate days: architectural history. This book illustrates the rich architectural vocabulary that several decades later was tossed aside when Modernism imposed a poverty 'yes, poverty!' of architectural vocabulary in both education and practice. It was as though we had forbidden musicians to study and learn to play classical music: a colossal loss of our culture. So study this book. Open your eyes. See the variety of shapes, textures, rooftops, windows, and materials. Compare the richness of what you see with how we build today. Feel what was lost.
