Honoree's Remarks

This is a story about health. It is about why some of us get sicker more often and die sooner and what causes us to fall ill in the first place. It is really not about doctors or drug treatment. I chose this item because it challenges our predominant medical conceptual model of disease diagnosis and cure. It informs us that there is much more to our well-being than genes, behaviors and medical care. Social workers, for many years, embraced the Functional Orientation school of thought, a belief in the core principles of “Starting where the person is.” I think this documentary is an embodiment of such.
