Honoree's Remarks

I chose this book because it reflects my roots. I am from Assam, a state in the Northeastern part of India. Assam and the northeast India have a culture distinctive to this region. Yet, this region is known more for its recent history of conflict and tension with the central Indian government. Growing up, I experienced political and civil movements to usher change that led to insurgency, counter-insurgency, and other forms of social protests. And the region made news for all the wrong reasons. Very few Indians outside of the Northeast know about the people or their culture, the most significant of which is the presence of gender equality. Even as I searched for a book that discusses all of these, it was very hard to find one that is comprehensive and contemporary. Stories are possibly one of the best ways to experience a culture without having an opportunity to experience it first-hand. This anthology comprises literature from eminent writers from this region. My vision is to highlight the literatures, cultures, hardworking communities, and innovations in this region – which is where I am from and which has shaped me. Hopefully this aids in better understanding and appreciation of the region, its cultures, and people.
