Honoree's Remarks

Books serve as mirrors, windows, and doors for young readers. They connect children to characters like themselves, to affirm who they and their communities are.  They provide a window out to a world where children can meet people who have different backgrounds and who look different. They invite children into new experiences and worlds they might otherwise never know.

Even though we know these things, many children do not have access to diverse books. This book helps teachers recognize the reasons why we need to expand the availability of diverse books for children, gives them the theory and tools to make thoughtful decisions about books in their classrooms, and creates ways to help children experience a more inclusive world.
