My husband and my late dad have both taught me the importance of remembering what it's like to be in the position of those you teach to show them you care. Father Capodanno demonstrated this perfectly. He was a Navy Chaplain in Vietnam serving Marines. He did not have to go into battle with them but did. He ultimately gave his life to save a Marine after having been injured twice earlier that day. Likewise, though my dad did not have to work in the trenches of the construction work he supervised, he did so to build camaraderie with his crew--to show he cared. Through the examples of Father Capodanno and my dad, and the insight of my husband, I try to remember what it's like to be a student at the undergraduate, master's and PhD levels to keep my teaching student-centered.
