Black writers in Latin America

One of the most impactful books in my career was the text, Black Writers in Latin America (1979) by Richard L. Jackson. This text was the first to discuss black Hispanic writers in Latin America from the 19th century to 1979 from a literary, historical, cultural and regional perspective. As a young scholar in graduate school, this work provided me with the foundation that I needed to understand black Hispanic literature. Furthermore, it provided a blueprint to pursue my doctoral dissertation on afro-Panamanian literature. This research led to the publication of my first book manuscript in 2014 on the same topic: The Politics of Race in Panama: Afro-Hispanic and West Indian Literary Discourses of Contention.
