Honoree's Remarks
The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins was the seminal book that started me on the path to studying mobile genetic elements and genome evolution. The 'gene's-eye evolutionary point-of-view' of the arms race genes have with each other that was put forth in the book was truly an epiphany for me, a light-bulb moment that set me on the path to graduate school and ultimately to my position at UT Arlington. The Selfish Gene laid the intellectual framework for understanding mobile genetic elements and genome evolution.
